New Democracy Statement on Roe v. Wade
For Immediate Release
January 22, 2024
Washington, D.C. – Today marks the 51st Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision which granted the constitutional right to abortion and which was overturned in 2022.
In recognition of this anniversary, and the work needed to be done to protect access to reproductive health care, New Democracy Director Matti Miranda released the following statement:
“On the would-be 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade, millions of Americans across the country are dealing with a different reality – the loss of fundamental freedoms. Since the overturn of Roe v. Wade, 21 states have banned abortion or enacted more restrictions than the standard set by the landmark ruling.
“Two thirds of Americans disapprove of the repeal of Roe, yet Republicans are continuing to push their harmful agenda and further limit reproductive freedom in America. For decades, Republicans have been crystal clear about their plans to overturn Roe v. Wade and we should expect them to restrict rights even further if elected later this year.
“Heading into 2024, it’s clear that abortion is a winning issue. When put on the ballot, voters are overwhelmingly choosing to protect their right to an abortion. New Democracy firmly believes in access to comprehensive reproductive health care for all Americans and will continue to support pragmatic Democrats who protect our individual liberties, including the freedom to choose.”
New Democracy is the home base for center-left Democrats at all levels of government. Together with its grassroots arm, Center for New Liberalism, New Democracy is committed to building a broad and durable Democratic majority.
