New Democracy Applauds Denver Mayor Mike Johnston on Success of House1000 Program
Denver Mayor Mike Johnston deserves praise for his radically pragmatic approach that has gotten 1,000 people off the streets and into housing in 6 months.
Washington D.C. – New Democracy, alongside our grassroots arm in Denver, the Denver New Liberals, applaud Denver Mayor Mike Johnston on achieving his bold promise to house 1,000 homeless people in the year he takes office through the House1000 Program.
The innovative approach taken by Mayor Johnston to address the homelessness crisis included converting abandoned hotels into temporary housing and utilizing micro-communities — low-cost tiny home villages with wrap-around services. Mayor Johnston’s initiative should serve as an example for other cities facing a pressing homelessness crisis.
“Addressing the growing homelessness crisis in our biggest cities requires bold action, innovative solutions, and real coalition building,” Matti Miranda, Director of New Democracy, stated. “Mayor Johnston’s commitment to those principles helped make House1000 successful, and results like these are why we are proud to have supported Mike Johnston’s campaign for Mayor last year.”
New Democracy commends Denver City Councilmembers Serena Gonzales-Guttierez, Sarah Paraday, Darrell Watson, Chris Hinds, Shontel Lewis, and Diana Romero Campbell, alongside the many Denverites who have come out to support Mayor Johnston’s bold yet pragmatic program.
As the new year begins, we are excited to continue to support Mayor Johnston’s radically pragmatic solution to homelessness and to see the Denver New Liberals spearhead a campaign in the coming weeks to provide support to Mayor Johnston and the council members promoting this initiative.
