Network of young activists join New Democracy to bolster center-left

Washington, DC – In U.S. politics, “Democratic activist” is often synonymous with the progressive and democratic socialist left. The New Liberals, the members of the Center for New Liberalism, however, are a fast-growing network of young activists who defy that stereotype. Today they formally join forces with New Democracy, a social-welfare organization that acts as an incubator of new ideas for governing and as a “home base” for center-left elected leaders and candidates.

The Center for New Liberalism (CNL) is a grassroots organization of pragmatically liberal activists with 55 chapters in the United States and more abroad.

CNL started first as an online community, and their impact has scaled incredibly. Every month, they reach over 15 million people on Reddit, over 10 million on Twitter, and listeners to their podcast with over a million downloads. All told across their social media platforms, CNL’s content reaches between 25-30 million people a month.

“We’re excited to welcome aboard the New Liberals, who constitute a potent ground force for supporting center-left ideas and candidates in communities across America,” said Will Marshall, Founder of New Democracy. “Unlike activists on the dogmatic left, the New Liberals bring a refreshing spirit of radical pragmatism, anchored in mainstream American values, that can only reinforce New Democracy’s mission of making center-left candidates more competitive everywhere.”

As a project of New Democracy, the Center for New Liberalism will now be able to engage directly in local and state political debates and contests to advance a pragmatic, center-left agenda in their communities. By joining forces with New Democracy, the already-established chapters will provide a physical and digital field force, organizing and supporting endorsed candidates for the 2024 election. In the last midterm cycle, New Democracy spent over $10 million to educate voters on issues vital to working Americans’ economic aspirations and upward mobility, and to support mainstream candidates for public office.

“Creating political change starts from the ground up, with grassroots, community organizing. CNL chapters across the country are poised to do just that, and New Democracy is excited to support local chapters as they turn community engagement into political activism,” said Matti Miranda, Director of New Democracy. “New Democracy is committed to making waves across the country and investing in key swing states, and partnering with CNL will help the party elect pragmatic leaders at all levels of government.”

“The Center for New Liberalism is thrilled that our local chapters – from New Hampshire to California and across the world – can now become more active and involved with state and local politics. We grew from a small online community of young center-left activists to more than 70 organized chapters globally. We look forward to supporting our local chapters as they work to elect pragmatic Democrats to office,” said Colin Mortimer, Director of the Center for New Liberalism.

CNL was founded in 2017 as a home for center-left activists from around the world. Today, the organization has expanded to over 70 chapters including 55 chapters in the United States and more than a dozen chapters abroad. By joining New Democracy, the CNL chapters will be able to directly support center-left policy locally and support center-left Democrats in primaries and general elections in all levels of government.
