New Democracy Release Statement on Passage of RESALE Act in the District of Columbia
WASHINGTON – Today, New Democracy released the following statement from Director Colin Mortimer:
“Yesterday, the DC Council voted to advance the RESALE Act, a bill that will harm consumers and undermine the District’s free and transparent ticketing marketplace. The legislation restricts concertgoers' choice in where they buy and sell tickets and hands more power to the ever-growing Ticketmaster monopoly by even further limiting competition, worsened by last-minute amendments submitted during the vote without prior review. This is a Ticketmaster giveaway, plain and simple, and will only further their destructive monopoly of the live entertainment industry. District residents should be extremely concerned that the Council is choosing to increase costs and reduce fairness in the ticketing market over passing legislation that actually solves their problems.
“New Democracy has been engaged to educate DC residents and urge them to oppose this Ticketmaster handout.
“We urge the DC Council to reconsider this legislation before they hand Ticketmaster even more power over fans, venues and artists. Washingtonians need regulation that addresses Ticketmaster as the root cause of unaffordable live events, not the RESALE Act’s giveaway to a destructive monopoly.”
