Winning Back the Heartland

Please join New Democracy for a gathering of Midwest Democrats Oct. 13 in Des Moines to take up the challenge of Winning Back the Heartland. This public forum will feature former Secretary of Agriculture and Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, former Secretary of Health and Human Services and Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, Kansas City Mayor Sly James, U.S. Rep. John Delaney, Former Iowa Attorney General Bonnie Campbell, former Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander, along with many other leading Mayors and state elected officials from around the region.

New Democracy is a new “home base” and support network for pragmatic Democratic leaders determined to break the Republican Party’s stranglehold on national and state politics. Its mission is to broaden the Democratic base to make the party competitive in every part of the country. Only then will Democrats be able to win a new mandate for change and put America on a genuinely progressive course.

In addition to elected leaders, the retreat will feature political strategists, policy innovators and private sector friends and supporters. The discussion will focus on how new ideas and a “big tent” approach can help Democrats win back the Midwest, which proved to be the pivotal political battleground in 2016.

Specifically, we’ll explore ideas for creating new jobs and businesses in the Heartland, and examine growing alarm in rural America over the Trump administration’s protectionist policies, which threaten to close foreign markets to U.S. agricultural exporters. We’ll also explore ways to bridge cultural divides with working class, rural and small town voters. And we’ll talk about how to expand political and financial support for the kind of pragmatic candidates who can expand the party’s appeal among moderate and independent voters.

We hope you will join us in Des Moines and get involved in New Democracy’s campaign to recharge the party’s intellectual batteries, broaden its appeal to voters and get back in the habit of winning elections.
