State Sen. Liz Mathis
Liz Mathis of Robins was elected to the Iowa Senate in a special election in 2011 and re-elected to her first four-year term in 2012. She represents the people of Robins, Marion, Cedar Rapids, Hiawatha, Bertram, Ely, and southern Linn County.
Senator Mathis is chair of the Human Resources Committee. She also serves on the Appropriations, Commerce, Economic Growth, Education and Veterans committees.
Liz is the daughter of a World War II veteran and a schoolteacher. She grew up on her family’s farm near DeWitt, attended Central Community High School and graduated from the University of Iowa.
Liz was a journalist for 25 years and now works for a child welfare and behavioral health agency that helps troubled kids and their families. She has received numerous awards for her work in journalism, women’s leadership, the legislature and her community, including the Corridor Business Journal’s “Women of Influence” and “Most Influential” awards.
Liz and her husband Mark, who owns a marketing and advertising company, have two children and live in Robins.
